Bill, sending units are really pretty simple, just a potentiometer setup attached to a float. On my '46 project I had to have the fuel tank re-built and I checked the sending unit myself. It still read accurately so I was good to go. You might have yours checked by someone that can do that for you. This assumes it hasn't been damaged by corrosion or the float is no longer bouyant.
