1968 stripe question
I'm currently looking at the 1968 442 models*equipment*prices sheet and this has been bothering me for a while so maybe you can clear it up.
Under "STANDARD EQUIPMENT", it lists:
Anyway, if you have pics, that'd be cool, cause for the life of me I'm not sure what they're talking about.
Under "STANDARD EQUIPMENT", it lists:
- Paint, G.T. Side Stripe
- W36 Paint, Rally Stripe--Standard with W30. N.A. with G.T. Side Paint Stripe............................................ ....................$15.80
Anyway, if you have pics, that'd be cool, cause for the life of me I'm not sure what they're talking about.

No kidding? Wow, I've seen so few cars with them (including in photos) that I guess that I never really knew they were standard. Think I saw them on a W-31 once, and that's about it.
Any photos of them on a '68 442?

While we're talking about the W36 stripe (this is the "bumblebee stripe on the front fender, for those who aren't familiar with it), why does it seem like every 68 442 now has one when it didn't come with one from the factory. The little known secret is that when the W36 stripe was ordered, the 442 emblems were relocated reward, closer to the door. This was done so that the stripe would end up centered between the back edge of the wheel opening and the front edge of the door at the bottom of the fender. Look at most 68s that have the stripe and note that the leading edge of the stripe will probably hit the back edge of the wheel opening. This is because the car did not have the stripe originally and whoever painted it was not aware of the emblem relocation.
Sorry this is just a pet peeve of mine...

Fusick also sells a 1968 442 Stripe Stencil Kit, P/N 68SS, for about $80, that might also aid you in getting the W36 stripe in the correct position. My brother used it with success in putting the W36 stripe on his car (the blue one). Fortunately, mine (the white one) originally came with the stripe.

Hi Joe. Thanks for the valuable information. I never knew the "442" placement was different for factory-ordered stripe cars. I was all set to add stripes and realized my 442 placement is only a little over 9 inches from the stainless steel fender top molding and over 4 inches from the edge of the fender (near door). I guess I clearly have a "no stripe" car and I want to stay "correct" although I like the stripes. I do notice that many 442s have incorrect stripes - they are too close to the wheel opening molding. On another note, I can't find my build/broadcast sheet - have checked in and under the seats. My car is any early '68 production Fremont, CA build. Any ideas where the sheet may be hidden? Thanks again for your insight. Best wishes, Paul

The broadcast card can be under the carpet, under the rear seat, or in the seat springs, if it has one. As yo have a California built car, there is a chance that the buildsheet is on top of the gas tank.

Ever since Phoenix Graphics started selling the W-36 stripe template, EVERY SINGLE 68 442 on the road now has them - and all located incorrectly. The 68 shown in the Phoenix Graphics catalog even has them wrong.
When these cars were new, I NEVER saw one on the road that had the stripes.

O.K. so I guess it's safe to say that a car that didn't come with stripes has the 442 script in the wrong place on the fender. So when you add the stripes they line up where they line up unless you plan on moving the script back and then need to do patching and paint work. Who is going to go through all that? So excuse us all who have the stripes in the "wrong place." Just saying.

Yes, the topic is 7 years old, but the cars are even older..... I agree with Joe about the pet peave. I think it boils down to guys want to add as much to their cars as they can, even if it was not accurate for their car. For some reason a few years after production when it was time to repaint, the body shops never replaced the STANDARD GT stripe. My pet peave is those ubiquitous "Hurst equiped" emblems. I NEVER saw one until the last decade, now they are all over the place.

I know what ya mean. When my Dealer plastic sticker fell off my Cheby 2500 4 X 4 I had to use one to cover up a bad spot on the tail gate paint.

"Press release"; Olds extends W-36 to 1969 models!
This is getting comical. I did a review one night of all 1968 4-4-2's for sale and noticed that almost all of them had the W-36 stripe. Only a few had the emblems in the right location. I guess guys are so hungry for some stripes they will add them anywhere. Now that they are moving into 1969, I may add them to my 1973!
If you are looking for wheels, check "Wheel Vintiques" They might have what you want.

Wheel Vintiques will make a custom rim for $349 which is also what The Parts Place is selling each of the three repro 15x7's that they have left in stock from the last run. When Wheel Vintiques ran a production run of these rims they were priced at $149 each (at The Parts Place too). They stopped making them about two years ago. They are only making SSI's now. From what I gather they'll run the SSI's until the market gets soft and then they'll switch back to SSIII's. Apparently there isn't enough interest from the Olds crowd to keep everything on the shelf. Just one thing at a time
Does any place in the NE chrome rims? I have two 15x7's that I could get chromed too

You tricked yourself, Chris. Look again at the fender emblems and the leading edge of the hood and grille. The car in Post #28 is a 1969, thus my inclusion of it here. Frankly, the stripes look better on that car than on most 1968s!
