69 W-30 Distributor

I have a 1111933 distributor with an 8K1 build date. My early catalog (PA310; 66-69 models; September 1968) shows this as correct for a 69 400 (AT) or OAI except UHV.

My 1975 parts book shows those applications, and also shows it applicable to the 1968 year 400 (AT) or OAI except UHV, and to the 1968 H/O without AC.

Would the additional 1968 coverage in the later book be as a service replacement? If so, would the vacuum advance unit or the springs/weights need to be modified to the specs of the original units for those applications if it were used in them?

GM seems to have broadened applications for a lot of part numbers over the years, and I've always wondered about it. Another example my 75 book shows on the same page is the use of the 1111979 70 W-30 (AT) distributor in the 69 W-32 and H/O.

You are correct in assuming that GM superceded part numbers when the originals were no longer available. As an example, the K heads are listed as service replacements for the F heads, although they are not the same.

If GMSPO consolidated a number to cover applications other than original installation, they reasoned it would function correctly in those applications.

A complete service replacement unit was designed to install as shipped without alteration.

Besides, after 5 years the warranty was long expired, and they weren't concerned about someone coming along 40 years later and agonizing over matching numbers. Their expectation was that the vehicle would have been scrapped by then.
