Value 1973 442?

Gentlemen,

there is a very nice 73 442 for sale here in Germany…mint condition, all mechanicals like brakes, steering, suspension gone through, 455 rebuilt with Edelbrock aluminum heads…looks stock.

Here is the link:

http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat...196227799.html

I think this is a good price and i m sure i can negotiate this down a little bit but what is your take on the value of these cars? I have seen a few in the US that were surprisingly expensive but i always had the feeling nobody cared for the 442 after 72…?

I must say i like the way the A-bodies after 73 ride and handle (i have a GP and a Monte Carlo) and this is really tempting for me…am i nuts?

Like you said, the desire somewhat fell after 72. Less power and arguably a weird design. I've only seen a few posted on my site, and never for really that much. You can see the 4 I've seen here:
http://www.oldsmobilecentral.com/too...&color=all&s=1

But for you, its not really about what price they usually go for because you are in Germany. Its much more rare, you would be paying a lot for the exclusiveness of probably having the only 1973 442 in the country!

Basically the price is high for here in the states as 14.5k eu = $16475.02. Being that it's in Germany, you'd have to figure shipping into what ever you would buy here and import. So I'd say it's not a bad price. From the pictures and description, someone spent some money on it and it's no where near stock. I'd lose those wheels.

Yes, you are right about the wheels….

i was thinking if i could get the guy towards 10 K it would be a good deal considering the money that was spent on it…

The "weird" styling grew on me over time but i guess that there is no market here and i could just try to lowball the seller…he will never get the 14.5 he is asking for…

Power should be OK with the Edelbrock heads…an the car looks quite mint…especially the interior. Love those swivel-seats...

Hopefully they did some other work to the engine to justify the use of those heads. I would think there would be some negotiating room in the price. I would look the whole car over carefully to see what else has been done to it. Make sure the underside is not all rotted.

Yes, this is what i will try to do…although i am pretty sure that will be a hard task…on the other hand everybody that i have asked what they think about this cars has replied that they think it is buttugly (non Oldsmobile-people)…so i guess it will be hard for him to sell it…i must admit that i think the later colonnades with the square headlights are much more handsome but unfortunately they are lacking any performance options...

Overall The car look good and solid.
Seat are obviously redone, they were not two tone from the factory.
Yuck on those wheels
273 hp? That's been tweaked a lot. Check for an engine rebuild certificate.
This car is pretty basic and has very little in the way of options. Nice to see it with a 455 though. It will eat you alive with the price of petrol.
These cars were not built with metric speedos. Is the 102,000 km really 102,000 miles? That's a big difference. 102k miles is close to 164,000 km.
What's the sticker on the RF fender?

Chances are this car was brought over by someone in the service and left behind at end of tour. Price is too high even for US market. Sounds like the seller is trying to squeeze the cost of all reconditioning back to his wallet. That's just not realistic for this car. IMO, it would look better without the vinyl roof.

Its my opinion that its a solid $5000- $6000 car here in the states if solid body and engine is good running. It need that interior replaced , and rims and tires just to sit my **** in it....
I know from a friend in Norway that 73-77 cars are almost double US dollar when over there.... So yes 10 to 11000 sound correct. Good luck. Let me know how you make out!

I guess i will not buy this car….i have just bought a 74 Challenger in Canada…OK i know it is not an Oldsmobile but i always wanted a nice Challenger… i guess i will concentrate on my 71 W30 and the Toronados (66/70GT/74) that i have. Thanks to everybody for the advice…from the information you gave me i got the feeling that the deal was not as good as i initially thought. Compared to the 71 that i was able to buy for 20k the 73 seems downright expensive…

Oh yesssssssssss, hands down, a much better choice. I'm not locked into just Oldsmobiles, there were so many other beautiful and interesting cars available back then. Congrats!

Have a look at my Website: www.us-car-collection.de

It is in german but you can see pics of all my cars....this site is proof that i have totally lost my mind....;-)

I hope you all agree on my taste of cars....i have a few priciples: Only two doors, only 60ties and 70ties, a few restomods because i drive all my cars and like them to drive as good as possible...although most of my cars are stock...mostly GM, very little Ford (Lincoln) and just one MOPAR wich i have just bought....

PS: Info added to my profile...

@oldsmobiledave: Yes, it is strange that i have only one Chevy but somehow BOP-cars appeal more to me...

Your list of cars is impressive too! With those modifications they sound exactly like my kind of car....do you have pics of your Oldsmobiles?

I am cofounder of a company that makes cash registers www.vectron.de I am also a cofounder of a real estate development Company...i have been rich (mostly on paper) and broke (real) several times in the last 20 years.....at the moment i am doing rather well but i always try to position myself for another downturn...if things get worse i will sell the cars...

Believe me, the cost of gas is the smallest part....you need a big warehouse to store the cars...i have my own mechanic that does most of the work...the total costs are ridiculous...but i have dreamed of this since i was a Boy...and now i live the dream...feels great!

Very nice group of cars, I liked the exhaust cutouts in the rear bumper of the Buick. Did a similar setup on my Plymouth.

Wow, Dave you are about as crazy as me…the only thing that i have to learn is to sell as many as i buy…but my warehouse is almost full so i have to stop…

You have fantastic cars! Are you only into Oldsmobiles or is there any other brand that interests you?
