68 OAI scoop questions

I have searched around but have not come up with the mounting questions on the 68 under bumper scoops.

What was used to mount the brackets to the plastic scoop. Rivets? Or?

I assume that the brackets then are bolted to the radiator support. Bolt through or?

Thanks for any responses!

Correct - rivets were used to hold those L brackets to the body of the scoop.

Pretty sure the brackets go to existing holes in the core support.
Dang I should know this but my '68 has never had its OAI since I got it
the parts are stored in the garage.

Assembly manual perhaps has details

Yes, they go in existing holes in the core support - if I remember, a couple of the LH ones use the same bolts that hold the battery tray down.

as mentioned all holes in core support

If '68 scoops are similarly constructed as the '69 scoops you will also want to use the "backer" washers under the rivets on the insides of the scoops. ALL rivet points used these washers on the '69 scoops. These help spread the load/reduce concentrated stress on the plastic scoop surface. First pic below shows these on a set of '69 scoops I restored. Other pics are for general enjoyment/entertainment.

How did you crimp the stainless trim on, and what determined the correct spot to place the crimps?

The crimps were there from the factory....it's been 3-4 years since I did them but I believe I used a punch/tap with hammer on the outside while holding a dolly on the other side (could have used at least one extra arm/hand doing that!). May have mounted the dolly in a vice to hold it so I could deal with the punch and hammer with my hands.

With some imagination you could probably make a hand-held crimper using a cheap pair of plain old adjustable pliers with a backing plate on one jaw and a sort of raised dimple/punch form on the other.

Some of the stainless trim pieces were in pretty sad shape..."before" pics of one of them below:

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have to look again, but I dont remember any pre-existing holes in the radiator support near where the braces would be, BUT the PO on this car didnt care, he just used some glue and stuck them on! Needless to say that idea didnt work well and at a show in Florida last weekend, a friend came up and told me that one of the scoops was laying on the ground. A bit embarrassing!

I have a set of replacement stainless that I bought several years ago, but they have no dimples in them, I had thought of doing the adjustable plier thing, just was concerned with the correct location and size of the crimps.
