Need help locating 442 emblem mounting holes for a 1968
sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but does anyone have dimensions on where to put 442 emblems on the fenders and trunk? Assuming no fender stripe.
I picked up a 68 cutlass convertible restomod and am going to make a 442 clone.
Thanks guys
Jim

Hi Jim
I moved this to a new thread. Often you'll get better results with a new thread.
I've got pictures of the deck or trunk lid location. If this isn't precise enough maybe someone will have a template you can use.
The first two are from the passengerside edge of the deck lid

Then here's from the bottom edge near the tail light up

Then here's a 442 parts car missing the emblem. I was surprised to see the mounting holes are not round.

The trunk holes for a 442 are the same as the Cutlass script. If the holes are filled in, put your finger through the inner hole in the lid and you should feel the original location of the left hole and then go from there.

Thanks so much guys... Should at least make that piece easier.
Anyone have dimensions for the fenders? I know there's a big thread about what's correct for a stripe vs. no stripe. There are dimensions for a striped fender, but I couldn't find anything for a non-striped one.
Do people clone a lot off Cutlass' into 442s? I figured they would have but can't find that much information on it regarding emblem placement and/or how to remove the chrome from the rear taillights.
I'm actually surprised there's so little information on it; seems like everyone and their mother clones a lemans or tempest into a GTO
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

so I've got all the cutlass emblems on there. If they are square holes without speednuts holding them on, how do you pop the emblem off?
And just so I get this completely correct, I need to remove the
"oldsmobile" on the hood
"S" emblem in the center of the hood
"cutlass" and "S" emblem on fenders
"Cutlass" on the trunk
"Cutlass" on the glove box
as always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Allyolds, I'm in central MA, about 10min east of Worcester... think seneca falls is a bit too far.
Sammy, HUGE help, sir... thank you so much. I'm sure I can work it out from here.
Now I just need to figure out the damn color of this car so I can match all the damn S emblem holes... no shot in hell this thing is actually scarlet red

Actually I am having a similar problem. There are no holes for the long OLDSMOBILE trim piece toward the bottom of my deck lid on my 68. I am not sure what it came off of, but I think I have the same 4 holes on the deck lid (mine are round though) as the parts car at the top of this post. I am also missing the holes for the rocket emblem. Now, 2 of the 4 holes for the cutlass/442 emblem were filled in with bondo.. no prob I could see them at a certain angle and I bought a template from the parts place...
Now I have no idea where the holes for the long piece need to be. The holes for the smaller end caps that go onto each quarter panel have just bolts in there now filling in the hole. As far as I can tell, the deck lid NEVER had any holes drilled out for a rocket emblem or the long piece of trim. Any help would be great! I think the F 85s even had the trim piece and a rocket on the deck lid if I am not mistaken?!

A template would be SUPER helpful!!!!!! I am not sure why the decklid didn't have the holes. Would it be possible to get a template for the rocket emblem too? I think the 442 and cutlass script had the same holes as stated before and my holes did line up with the expensive a$$ template I bought off of parts place (it was just a sticker). The decklid was not from this car I don't think. I am not sure what it came off of.. but everything on it lines up for a 68 olds. I don't think it was off a vert since they are a bit different arent they?
Anywho... trying to get those bolts out of the end cap holes has proven difficult thus far. Going to have to mess with those more. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!! At least I have the long strip olds trim. Been dying to install it.

For the trunk emblem if you don't have the holes I'd just use a good quality double sided tape (I prefer 3M). It's a one piece emblem, not individual numbers like the fender. I was missing one end stud on my "OLDSMOBILE" trunk emblem and that was my solution.

I am in the same predicament....I made a rough template for the trunk holes before I rebuilt lid.....sounds like tape would be easier

Ted,
Just the end stud. I also had two studs that were broken with a small amount of stud left. The studs only stuck through the trunk lid a 1/4" or so. I used the quick nuts backwards on those and tightened them lightly with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Bump / small hijack....
Man, if you have a trunk lid (69-72) with original 442 removed, you could make a small killing on creating a template. Cheapest I've seen was $39.50 shipped from Fusick. I deem that unacceptable.
Get a roll of 3" painters tape, roll a strip across the holes, poke 'em out, mark the edge of the trunk, lay tape on clear plastic sheet and put them on here for $20 a pop....you could do alright.
If someone does this, I won't even ask for a cut....just send me the first 1 for free and call it even
