1972 442 W-29

What options were included in the W-29 package in 72? As I understand, the VIN are the same code for a Cutlass S and 442. I have a 1972 cutlass S with 442 emblems. It has bucket seats with console floor shifter, 350 2bl with a 350 transmission. The grilles are gone. The title is Cutlass S, not 442. What should I be looking for to determine if I have a Cutlass S or a 442? LC

In 1972, the 442 was only an option package on various Cutlass models. The package included the FE2 suspension package (springs, shocks, and front and back anti-sway bars with boxed lower control arms) and the appearance package (442 emblems, grilles, thin side stripe, and chrome louvers on the hood). The W29 package was available with any Cutlass engine that year, including the 350 2bbl single exhaust. 350 cars (even with N10 dual exhaust) did not get the cutout back bumper. Only 455 cars got the cutout bumper. The glovebox emblem was NOT the 442 emblem but the Cutlass or Cutlass Supreme emblem for the base car. Unfortunately, unless you have the build sheet (or the car is an original W-30 with an X code in the VIN) you can't really prove the car is a W29 car. The boxed lower control arms ARE a good indication, however. Another good indication is that the emblem holes in the fenders are original and there is no evidence of the holes for a different emblem (Cutlass, for example) having been filled previously.

Thumbs up

Also look under the carpet and behind the plastic seat backs for a build sheet or card. I found the card for my 72 U code w29 under the carpet near the drivers seat belt.

The build sheet could be anywhere, or not in the car at all. Other locations that have yielded build sheets are under the back seat, on top of the gas tank, between the package shelf and the metal underneath, and inside the front seats.

Are the 72 U code W 29's a rare car ??? I have one with many options and am trying to learn more about them. I do have the build sheet and dealer order form. The W29 code is under the COPO part #12 on the build sheet.

A documented factory big block car is always desirable.
