68 pin stripe

68 pin stripe
Does anyone have a pic of the pin stripe that came standard on the 1968 442....started below front fender chrome and wrapped up onto the roof to top of windshield.
I checked various sources but cannot find stripe design, measurements etc.
Maybe I am just not looking in the correct places
thanks,
Ted

Ted,
These are some pictures I took of my 68 442 which I have owned since 1988 and as far as I know has the original paint. It is a Lansing built car. The stripe appears to be approximately 11/32" wide? Of course it may vary from plant to plant and who was painting that day.

That is great! Exactly what I was looking for...I will be referring to this measurement soon.
My 68 is Oshawa built, and I think it has two of these stripes...hard to tell.
Thanks,
Ted

There should be very little variation, as there were specs (layouts) for them.

If you have access to it, there are some pictures of cars with this stripe in the softback book "Oldsmobile 4-4-2 and W-Machines" by T. Patrick Sullivan. On page 59, there are two pictures of a '68 4-4-2 convertible. And, on page 64, there's a picture of a '68 W-31 holiday coupe. I was going to scan the pics and put them here but there might be some sort of a copyright problem!

this is a 68 we built a couple years ago with the gt stripe (i think that's what it's called). we actually didn't know the car had them since it had been repainted. but as we were stripping the parts we found the factory stripes and took pics and measurements so we could put them back on. it's been awhile now so i don't remember the measurements anymore. i believe the stripes were 1/8", 1/2" or so from the front edge of the fender, 5/8" or so below the moldings, and the stripe kinda tapered off at the top of the A post (thinner).

I found another one. You can see the stripe and what's left of the old fasteners holding the peak molding on. It's hard to make out where the fender actually is. The old bumper is lying on top of it.

Mike,
I can clearly see the remnants of the stripe wrapping around rear onto roof and ending at the top of windshield on my car...faintly I might add
Virtually identical to the pic ofscr8p car and the link that he posted.
Really appreciate the help....I want this GT stripe to be accurate...

I have been trying to decide which of the four colors to paint my GT stripe. The car is G code Willow Gold with black interior & white convertible top. According to the assembly manual, black, white, red or orange could be chosen. I thought if I gently sanded through the paint layers, I might find a clue. This car was repainted once with dark gray lacquer primer & topcoat. They must have sanded off the stripe before the repaint. I found this remnant of the pattern using a hand lacquer thinner washing action. The color is gone, but the telegraph of the pattern remained. C.ar S.cene I.vestigation. If anybody has thoughts on which color to choose, I can't find anybody who chose to restore or knows about the GT stripe until I found this thread. The doors are vertical with scale held to crown. Blue tape is to help find the stripe phantom. This one measures 3/16" wide, 1 1/4" down. Thanks

The GT stripe on my 68 442 coupe was provincial white, while the exterior color is also Willow gold...the car is being returned this combo.
The hold up seems to be the exact width and placement of the stripe....
CSI
I found the ghost stripe on my car also and the measurements are pretty close to what Scott442 had posted^^^^
IMHO,the black or white stripe would look good on your convert......

when you say you found the ghost stripe, was it just like the Hurst far as the hood and by rear window.
My convert when I first got it had the stripes on the hood I thought it was an after thought but when I had it re-painted (and of course not knowing of them at the time) the body man told me it was original paint but still didn't think it came from the factory like that.
One day I think they are going back on

I find that my stripe location is exactly the same as Scott's red 4-4-2/ black stripe posted here. I am very grateful to his post. I measured 1 1/4" from the crown to the top of the stripe. The only question is whether it was 3/16's" wide like mine or 5/16's" like his. Mine was built in Lansing and was a C shift car. I would be comfortable just doing 1/4" wide. I think these were painted on using a "bugler" type paint wheel. I am posting a couple pics from the Nat's. This car was very well done. It is so strange how a stripe which was standard is so often removed and not replaced.

The smallest increment on the tape measure is 1/32". So how do you get 5/16"?
Unfortunately any '68 manual that I've seen has no stripe info at all in it.

I stumbled upon some pictures of a car that was on the market about year ago and it has a double stripe. Unfortunately, there weren't many other pictures. I assume this was a mistake during restoration then?

May not have been a mistake, but that is not a factory correct stripe. Maybe they were shooting for the dash and missed.....

Since this post was fresh, I have found that the TCP Global color library has the four stripe codes for the GT stripe. The codes from Dupont or R-M are obsolete. The colors must still be available, because when I entered the codes from their PPG sheet, it gave me a price. It is an excellent resource for paint work. I am going to get the Beugler set-up and some enamel and practice.
