68 gold exterior paint??
I'm sure all of you have seen this pic before. In fact, it's close to the one in the original '68 Olds dealer brochure. http://gmphotostore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=53218241
What I'm a little perplexed by, is, what color is this? if you go to the '68 color chart (see attached pic), it isn't listed. it certainly isn't willow gold or buckskin. can anyone clarify what the story is behind this? Last edited by 68Tom : 05-29-2008 at 07:37 AM. |

I'll have to fish out my '68 brochure. I don't remember that car being quite that "yellow" in the brochure. I thought the brochure car was Willow Gold.

Hmm, maybe you're right Paul. I just got the '68 brochure in the mail, so I haven't checked it all that closely, but it does have the same goofy guy in his sky diving regalia. However, that pic from the GM site is most likely off the negative and should be a more accurate portrayal of the color than the lousy inks used on the 60's brochures.
I think one of three things is going on here: 1) they used the coloration from the Gold Poly option rally stripe on the entire car (not sure if it really matches, however), 2) they used a color in the pic that they decided not to offer in '68, OR 3) this is a one of the special order colors offered. I was actually thinking of painting my car this color, as I think it'd look great with the black vinyl top and rally stripe, but I don't want to use a non-'68 stock color on the car. I guess I could buy and carry around that GM pic with me all the time and point to it if questioned. haha. |

Paul, just checked out the '68 brochure. The car in the pic in the brochure, which is actually the same pic in the link above, is definitely not as "gold" as the one in the link. I'm guessing they colored it a bit to make it look more like the willow gold. However, if you look, it's definitely too dark for willow gold. So, it's either the color they stuck on the prototype car or it was a special order color.
Maybe I'll be the first to have a 'Prototype Gold' car. We'll see.... |

Could be a "one off" custom color...I will have to admit that I have liked that color for a long time. When I bought mine in June '68 I had to settle for Willow Gold as I was told the brochure color was "not available".
Regards, Fred

that's a neat link. If you do a search for 70 442 they have the same gold on the brochure for 1970 and they have an image of the assembly line building an Azure Blue 442
