Olds A Body 1971 Vs. 1972 Differences
#81
One of the strangest technology progressions I've ever seen - in '72, the 442's went BACK to using the externally regulated alternator after being equipped with the internally regulated version from 69-71. I'm sure it has something to do with 442's losing their own model designation, but in 73 all Oldsmobiles got the internally regulated alternator!

FYI, all 71 and 72 Cutlass S got the hood with faux louvers. So did any of the cars with the W29 option. Part of that option called for the addition of the hood stripes and blacked out faux louvers. 71 stripe package is called Y73.
Scott, In 1972 the f-85 was only offered as a sedan, aka town sedan (base Cutlass). The 2 door base lost the f-85 designation and was badged as Cutlass. That would be an appearance issue, as the VIN would not show that designation.

Ted, The owner may claim it's original paint, but when that picture is enlarged it's pretty easy to see that the hood was originally white and has been color changed. Look at the white surfaces under the rear cowl vents and you'll see the white. As far as the W29 hood striping - it was decals from the factory, not paint. I'd be curious to know if that hood has the proper Oldsmobile script over the LS headlights.

So was this hood available in 71/2 with the cowl vents?
