found a 68 442

Hallo,

my name is Ernst, I m from Austria in Europe. I ve found a 442 1968 in my country. I havent bought ist so far. I m in musclecars for a long time, but Im an Olds-rookie. Maybe, someone can help me to decide to buy or not.
The VIN ist 344878 Z ... should be no clone, but what is the Z for ?
It should be a 325 HP 400 an has automatic transmission. It doesnt have the W30 option.
Exterior colour is a light cream or eggshell, dont know correct name or colour number. Ive a 1:18 Die cast 442 1968 in this colour.Interior is black.
Its an older Resto with perfect chrome, seats, carpet, headliner, very good paint with small imperfections, clean trunk and engine bay, everything original.
Engine and trans are numbers matching (not approved so far) and have been redone (not approved). Engine has been painted in wrong colour red.Aircond. is there but has to be recharged.
There is a crack in the dash, a chip in the windshield and the exhaust pipes have some rust, endtips are perfect.
I think this car would be called a 20 footer in the USA.
It drives very well, engine runs smooth, shifts are not so smooth as expected, but not harsh, brakes are better than expected with the drums.
Underside of the car is dry, no oil from engine or transm.
The price is around 15.000 Euro, maybe 18-19.000 USD.
Could anyone give some information about the cult-status and value of the 442 in the USA.Are there troubles with getting parts?

Thanks in advance, Ernst

Ernst; I have a reference at home that may help. In the meantime I have found this link
http://search.ebay.com/1968-442_W0QQ...rvZ1QQsbrsrtZd

to help you a little. These are just a quick "window" look at prices here in USA and most are not complete yet so may bring more.

It sounds like your car might be a high 3 or perhaps a low 2 condition car, would you agree? I will check my reference soon and let you know what it reads. And, welcome to our site.

Hi Ernst-
The Z in the VIN indicates the city of the plant in which the car was built, in this case Fremont, CA. Wish there were some '68 442's for sale in my neighborhood!
