Don is right about orange being "hot" all the time and grey being the ground. You are right about the connector being "Murphy" proof, only one way it can go. I have a wiring diagram for the 1969 car which includes Delta and 98 models so I wouldn't think that there would be a difference in the way the grounds are switched (functionality the same). However, by your description of the problem it sounds like the ground is only switched by the door switches and not by the courtesy/light multifunction switch on the dash or the switch at the light itself. I think I have a solution on how to fix the problem. If you have an Ohm-meter, Check you map light switch and be sure it is closing when you activate it. If it is, make sure that one side is grounded, it could be that as installed on a 98 model there was metal to ground and on your Delta is is only plastic or the ground is interrupted.
