They feed off the STOP lamps fuse, thru the brakelight switch. Since you say the brake lights work, that tells me there's an issue at the turn signal switch itself.

First thing I'd check would be the connector at the bottom of the steering column. It may have come loose after 40 years. Crescent-shaped thing with several wires to it. That might save tearing down the steering column, which is not a fun job esp on a Tilt-Telescopic unit.

Someone else on here was searching for a Toro t/s switch a while back. Search the forums and you'll find the part #s.
