67 & 68 Delmont 88 Patrol Cars

I ran across these pictures while looking for something else and I had never seen these before. I don't know who the car belongs to or anything else about the car other than I just thought it was cool! Also, these Big Olds Police cruisers were talked about in the following thread sometime ago

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/announcements/12846-1969-delta-police-car-story-lees-summit-mo.html

and I thought those folks would like to see these latest pictures as they have some great detail that I have just never seen before. Enjoy the pictures and if the person who owns this car is on this forum, please join in the discussion and tell us more about this car. You will notice the last picture will be a 1968 version of the same car with a trooper standing beside it. It will take several posts to get all the pictures in.

Very cool. Olds had police packages for both the A-body and B-body cars throughout the 1960s. As we all know, the original 1964 442 was an adaptation of the B09 police package.

Hubcaps are the same as the 66 Toronado.

Here's a pic of a 1966 CHP Olds Police Apprehender...

I've never seen one in person, would LOVE to find me a set of those hubcaps, as far as I know, specific to police car only.

They look like hub caps from the mid 1950's. The last time Olds had 15" wheels would had been in 1956, so this 66 88 may have been equipped with '56 style wheels.

Thanks for posting that. I was wondering when I was looking at those 67 photos, if they had a 66 version, now I wonder if there was a 65 version? They just look so cool.

Check out that other thread that I linked to in the first post. There is a great road test of the 68 there done by the famous Tom McCahill. The article was from a February 68 Mechanix Illustrated. I think you will like the pictures also.

A friend of mine (Curt Anderson) has a 67 Delmont police car in complete, restorable condition. I don't know when he will get around to it, or if he would rather sell it to a "good home".

Not sure about that; there WAS a specific police wheel AND hubcap in '66, and I beleive that car was equipped with them. See attached, 4th line from the bottom left ("star design" caps for use on 15" wheels):

The caps indeed do appear to have some find of "star" or crown pattern, and my guess is that since they do not indicate the manufacturer, most anyone selling a set my have no idea what they have (mking it hard to find on say....EBay).

Also at the risk of repeating myself, my '65 Jetstar I is equipped with a set of those special 67-68 rims that take the Toro centercaps. I purchased them from a fellow board member about 4 years back.

Something else unique about that 68. Besides the 69 H/O, it's the only Olds that I know of, that had the engine displacement shown on the outside of the car.

Actually, that would have been the 1967 with the 425. 1968 cars got the 455.

Take a look at the first listing under 5.858 and you'll see '56 88-S88 has the same part# as the '66 police car hubcap. Henry

What I was saying I was "unsure of" was that usage of the '56 wheels (the last year of 15" rims, per your suggestion)...though even if the part number for those caps is the same, I am not prepared to believe (just yet) that it literally means its the same exact part as from '56. Not saying for certain it is not, just not convinced. I'll definitely keep an eye out, though.

Maybe I can shed some light on this hubcap. I looked in Dennis Casteele's book The Cars of Oldsmobile because I remembered in the 1956 section there is a picture of an 88 Olds Two-Door Sedan "Plain Jane" with these little bottlecap hubcaps. On the next page there is a 56 Olds ambulance with the same hubcaps. I can see that there is some white in the middle of the cap but the picture is not big enough to see the exact detail. Then I checked ebay for 56 Olds hubcaps and bingo, there was one for sale, see picture below. For more pictures, check the ebay link,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1956-...item2a0a7302d3

So, when I look at that 66 Olds police car and enlarge the picture, it appears that there is a star in the center of the cap, but just one from what I can tell and the description in the parts catalog makes mention of a star. The 56 cap for sale has several small stars, so it appears to me that the cap is the same, except that the detail in the center was changed to a single star by 66. Whatever cap its wearing, the whole car just has that "all business" look and I really like it. Are there any more pictures of this car or any history about it. There seems to be lots of info on the 67 and 68, but until I saw this picture, I did not know about the 66. Was it used that year, or was this perhaps a test car used to see how the CHP liked it before they bought a fleet the next year?

CHP 1966 fleet consisted of Dodge Polaras as did 1968. I would guess the 66 88 was a loaner car from Olds that was put into trial service. You can see on the RH corner of the hood it has a CHP unit number. This 66 also has shoulder harness option which was not carried over to the 67 Delmont fleet purchase.

The page from the parts book shows in 66-68 all the small hubcaps had a printed description to help in ID.

According to the write-up in Hemmings magazine on the 67 car, it was said, the 66 prototype was built and CHP decided to go for em but it was too late to produce the 66 cars so the order went in and they got 1967 models.

Apparently the fleet cars(1967's)were built is several batches as my car's build date is 1D while Curt Anderson's car was a March build date. .

That is very interesting; I tried yesterday to look for a clear image of a '56 "poverty" cap on Ebay and elsewhere on the net, and failed. The image I posted above was a scan I made of an original factory photograph I had purchased some years back, and even on that, the image quality is not clear enough to make out the center detail. However I think it may in fact depict multiple stars.

Came across this interesting Youtube vid today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJRfrx2Pa9M

A 1954 (or so) Olds police car is depicted from about 24-50 seconds
A 1966 (I think) Olds police car is depicted at 1:20 to 1:24.

Its hard to say if the caps are the same; its certainly possible (at least excepting paintwork). Regardless, I thought it was a pretty cool video. Of further interest to me are the 1969 cars that have the Y75 wheels and the GM ad (which I have never before seen) at 2:35-2:39 that touts the famous Tom McCahill article.

68 B07 Black/Black Delmont coupe

I've been really hardcore into full-size Pontiacs for over 25 years, and always loved the Oldsmobiles too.

One of my life long buds really dug 68 Oldsmobiles because his granddad had one growing up and drove it hard!

After running through a few Delta's and Delmont's, I found him this B07 Delmont.
This car was traded in to a Lincoln-Mercury dealer in MN by the original owners son!

I must say, this is, in my opinion, amazingly optioned..

Built in Lansing

L32 Police Apprehender 390HP 455 $100.00
M41 Police App Turbo 400 $252.77
N40 Pwr Steering $105.32

QD3 15" WW Radial tires $107.43

G80 Anti-spin rear axle $ 46.60
G90 Performance axle-3.08 $ --.--
B80 Chrome roof drip mould. $ 13.69
B85 Chrome side wind. mould. $ 19.49

C50 Rear window defogger $ 21.06
B07 Highway patrol Apprehender $ 20.96

Subtotal $ 1,742.94

Total $ 4,998.44

This car drips with COOL!!

Boxed rear control arms and sway bar! Perfectly optioned by it's original owner, who I suspect may have been an Olds employee or a cop?

Love this car and wish it was mine..

Yes. Indiana State Police ... here's the Trooper who drove it.

Weird... I thought Galaxies were the ISP cars in '65 & '66. And in late '66 they went to all white cars... '67s were all white Impalas...

That is sweet...sure wish I still had mine, though it was not a B07 car.

In the mid 60s early days of toll roads in Illinois I believe they had their own police force that drove full size Olds cruisers, I remember sitting in one once....

These are the only pics I have. I will ask him to take some pics of interior, under-hood and rear suspension when I talk to him.

The original Capacitor Discharge ignition was replaced by the prior owner with a MSD setup.

He claimed to still have all the original parts and come up with a price for it.

I picked up a set of NOS GM 67-68 front disk brake rotors for $100 and located a loaded 68 98 LS parts car with all the parts to do a factory disk conversion.

The aluminum drums are rarer than hens teeth and a cool conversation piece, but a stainless sleeved 4-piston set-up is the way to make the car absolutely perfect!

An AM-FM, either a wonderbar or Stereo will be sent out for a modern conversion with an Ipod jack..He has several cores to pick from. A mint underdash 8-track will be added as well at this time. This will cover the holes the prior owner made to mount an underdash radio.

Thinking about a Tilt-Telescopic wheel and column or a plain tilt with a 68 442 wood wheel and close ratio steering box.

The car screams and handles pretty sweet. Might also send out a spare set of 15" disk rims to have them widened to 7 or 8" wide. They would look cool with redlines or "Police" bluelines?

Very nice car indeed. I'm also a fan of the big car.

After running through a few Delta's and Delmont's, I found him this B07 Delmont.
This car was traded in to a Lincoln-Mercury dealer in MN by the original owners son!

I must say, this is, in my opinion, amazingly optioned..

This car drips with COOL!!

Boxed rear control arms and sway bar! Perfectly optioned by it's original owner, who I suspect may have been an Olds employee or a cop?

Love this car and wish it was mine..
I know I'm a bit "late to the party", but I have to say...so do I! That is about the coolest big car I've ever seen. All that police equipment in a coupe!

BTW, Indy_68, thanks for the interesting story on that Indiana trooper...
