Rear disc brake conversion.

Hello again. Ok so gettin a rear end may be a bit harder than I thought. So I thought about doin a drum brake conversion for the rear. Couple questions if anyone would know.??? For a 71 olds cutlass with 10 bolt rear non posi.

First-? will the conversion make the rear end any wider? I can't afford that, for I have custom wheels and they close to rubbin as it is.

Second-? Will the emergency brake still work?

Third-? The conversion kits are for cars with staggered shocks or with out staggered shocks? What is the difference and how to tell.

Fourth?- will I have to get a different booster, master cylinder, and proportioning valve? I already changed all that over when I did the front conversion.

Thank u for any help here. Much appreciated. GodBless

Do you mean a DISK brake conversion?

First-? will the conversion make the rear end any wider? I can't afford that, for I have custom wheels and they close to rubbin as it is.
At most it might increase the width by a quarter inch or so, but probably not even that much. It depends on the thickness of the center section of the rotor that you use.

Second-? Will the emergency brake still work?
Depends on the calipers that you pick. Some have e-brake provisions, some don't. A factory style caliper (Firebird, Seville, Eldo) will have the e-brake in it. Aftermarket calipers typically do not.

Third-? The conversion kits are for cars with staggered shocks or with out staggered shocks? What is the difference and how to tell.
Look under the back of your car. Also see my response to your other thread.

Fourth?- will I have to get a different booster, master cylinder, and proportioning valve? I already changed all that over when I did the front conversion.
You will need a master cylinder for four wheel disk brakes. You cannot use a drum/disk M/C. Most people use the Corvette M/C. This will bolt to your existing power booster. You will need a different proportioning valve.

Thank you mr Joe ! For answering both threads. Now can I ask if u recommend anyone in particular for a kit? Some body spoke about "right stuff" but I couldn't find anything on them. Google kept bringin up an anime website.

Do you have bigger wheels? If so and you want bigger brakes Kore3 is the best bang for the buck for brake kits. The other option is do what I did and use C5/C6 front with LS1 rear that I sourced myself.

yeah i have the 20" Boze Alloys in the back. problem i think i will have is, the wheels are fitted to the car already. if the disc conversion makes the rear end any wider i will have an issue.http://www.flickr.com/photos/30332343@N03/2841430649/

I am not positive, but i think you have to machine the axle hubs. Give Tobin a call at Kore3. He is the man when it comes to brakes. BTW nice looking car you have there. How did you lower it?

Ahh then they need to organize their website better. If you click on Rear Brake Conversions for GM there is nothing there.

Mine isn't lowered yet, it's still just a shell on a rotisserie. I do have 2" lower springs for it though.

You can't go wrong with Tobin but if you want to some a few $$ you can find take offs and just order the front mounting brackets from Tobin at Kore3. I set my car up with full manual brakes and I can just about put someone through the windshield if I wanted to.
Depending on the rear end you use the rear LS1 brakes are close to a bolt on. If you have an Olds rear you need to make some shims and need to get creative with the axle retention bracket. If its a Chevy rear its a 100% bolt on. Also by ordering a Lokar ebrake cable kit and ordered a 3rd rear cable and used it in front I was able to use the stock ebake pedal. It holds on a hill great even out of gear.
